Roswell’s mayor is finally speaking out regarding the heated debate on re-naming the town’s rec center.
One month ago, things got intense at a council meeting over whether to keep the name “The Roswell Recreation and Aquatic Center” or re-name it after civil rights activist Cesar Chavez.
The council ultimately voted 7-3 to retain the current name.
Now, Mayor Dennis Kintigh, in a candid chat with the Roswell Daily Record, says he would have voted to retain the name had there been a tie vote.
He told the newspaper he believes “we have to tread very carefully when it comes to naming things for individuals.”
Kintigh pointed to Columbus Day and the Santa Fe Entrada as examples and said that the current name is neutral and inclusive.
