Roswell decides not to rename rec center after three-hour debate

New Mexico News

A heated debate over the name of Roswell’s rec center came to a head at Thursday night’s city council meeting.

“Roswell’s everywhere. Roswell, Roswell, Roswell this, Roswell that, while Cesar Chavez has a lot of history. There’s a lot of history that the kids can learn from that person, who is our hero,” resident Charlene Hernandez said.

Some residents wanted to rename the center to honor Civil Rights activist Cesar Chavez and Hispanic heritage, but others said Chavez didn’t do anything for the town and wanted the name to represent the entire community.

“He has done nothing for Roswell. I think a Roswell hero, if we’re going to put a name up there at all, should be honored,” resident Leon Shorey said.

After a three-hour debate, the board voted 7 to 3 against the name change.

It will stay as the Roswell Recration and Aquatic Center until another name is proposed.
