Report shows inmate-on-inmate violence on the rise in New Mexico

(KRQE) - A new legislative report shows inmate-on-inmate violence in on the rise across New Mexico.

The report from the state's Legislative Finance Committee says 32 assaults have been reported so far in 2018. That is more than double last year's number.

The Department of Corrections says to avoid further attacks, it will better share information among prisons and improve its classification of inmates.

They hope to reduce assaults to 10 or fewer per year.

State analysts say prison facilities may be partially to blame for the increase.

This year, lawmakers set aside $200,000 to begin planning a new prison to provide adequate space for inmates and a safer environment for staff.

Nothing has happened in regards to that as of yet.
