A New Mexico congresswoman pressed the Air Force Secretary over the jet fuel leak at Kirtland.
During a recent House Armed Services Committee meeting, Rep. Deb Haaland asked Secretary Heather Wilson about the long cleanup process. The leak of millions of gallons of fuel into the soil was first discovered in 1999.
Haaland questioned the Air Force’s transparency on the cleanup and asked Wilson what she’s doing to regain the public’s trust.
“Congresswoman, we are committed to the Kirtland project. It’s a pump-and-treat largely, which will continue over a long period of time,” Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson said.
Haaland says she hopes the Air Force will keep in better touch will community in the future.
