Police: Suspected carjacker used officer’s gun to fire a shot

New Mexico

A Santa Fe police officer was trying to arrest a suspected carjacker Tuesday morning, when police say there was a struggle and the suspect got the officer’s gun and fired a shot.

The scene has since been cleared, but according to witnesses, there was a huge scene near Cerrillos Road and Baca Street on Tuesday morning.

There was also a government vehicle behind the crime scene tape, pinned in by a Santa Fe Police cruiser.

Santa Fe Police Lt. Michelle Williams confirms there was an officer-involved shooting at the Giant gas station.

The officer had located a vehicle that was reported stolen in a carjacking. Williams confirms that in some sort of altercation, the driver of that vehicle tried fighting the officer and then got ahold of his weapon, firing off a shot.

Officials say the suspect is 26-year-old Robert Noedel.

Lt. Williams also says Officer Gerardo Guerrero sustained minor injuries from the incident. She says Noedel is in custody at this time.

Santa Fe Police handed the case over to the sheriff’s department to investigate.

Both agencies are working together to release more information as to what happened.
