FARMINGTON, N.M. (KRQE) – At least four people are dead, including the suspect, and several others are injured following a shooting in Farmington Monday morning. Police said the suspect was shot and killed by officers on the scene.

The shooting unfolded around 10:57 a.m. along N. Dustin near Ute Street. Farmington Police claimed an 18-year-old man was “actively firing” on people in the neighborhood. Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe says the suspect fired at least three different weapons, including an AR-style rifle. Police say the suspect roamed up to a quarter of a mile in the neighborhood, shooting randomly at houses and cars. The suspect has yet to be identified but is thought to be the only suspect involved.

Police say at least three people were killed by the suspect before officers killed him. An officer from Farmington Police and another from State Police were among six wounded in the shooting, according to the department. Police have yet to identify any of the victims or their ages.

The two wounded officers were taken to the San Juan Regional Medical Center. As of Tuesday morning, one officer was still in the hospital and the other is out of the hospital recovering.

Farmington Police Department is planning to hold another news conference about the shooting Tuesday afternoon, May 16, around 2 p.m. Chief Hebbe addressed the shooting in a video statement published Monday evening.

“Anybody that has additional information, whether it be eye witness information or video information, or whatever it may be, if you feel its pertinent, we ask that you call dispatch at 505-334-6622,” said Deputy Chief Baric Crum of Farmington Police. “Provide them with that information so that we can continue this investigation and provide all of the relevant facts.”

Responding to the incident, the hospital and several schools went into lockdown Monday, including Apache and McKinley Elementary Schools, the Farmington Schools Central Kitchen, and the CATE Center. As of 1:05 p.m., the school lockdowns had been lifted.
