The Torrance County Detention Center is getting closer to re-opening.
The privately run jail closed in 2017 and was a blow to Estancia. Torrance County officials say they’ve been working with corrections management company “Civic Core” and the federal government to reopen the facility. The jail would house ICE detainees.
Friday, the county announced an agreement has been reached but the county commission will need to vote on it first. A special meeting is slated for Wednesday morning.
If approved, the jail is expected to provide more than 200 jobs and house more than 700 inmates, along with some space for Torrance County inmates too.
