Recent court rulings and treatment advocates could pave the way for the use of opioid-based medications in the Santa Fe County Jail.
According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, county commissioners are now seeking more information from jail officials.
Although no policy changes are in the works, commissioners are looking for input from jail officials.
“We’re trying to encourage the jail to do what they need to do, consistent with the other programs that they have”, Commissioner Anna Hamilton said. “We’re trying to be supportive, but we’re also trying to get more information.”
The jail’s policy of banning opioid-based medication for inmates that have a substance-use disorder was met with criticism by members of a county health care advisory board.
