‘Notes of Hope’ aim to discourage suicides at Taos Gorge

New Mexico

There’s a new push to prevent people from taking their own lives at the Taos Gorge Bridge using inspirational words.

Taos County Commissioner Candyce O’Donnell posted pictures of the “Notes of Hope” along the bridge, which has been an infamous site for suicides.

They say things like, “If you leave, someone will hurt as much as you do now,” and “don’t let yourself see only the dark.”

Those behind the project say the message is simple.

“You can make it, and it’s hard and I know because I’ve been there, but I promise it’s going to be better, and please reach out to anybody. It doesn’t have to be an official, but reach out to somebody just to get a hand.”

“Notes of Hope” is the work of local teens and organizations, including Help Outreach Taos, Common Grounds and the Taos News.
