A New Mexico State University graduate with a special connection to NASA has died.

Bradford Smith was the first student to earn a PhD in astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences at NMSU back in 1973.

He went on to lead the NASA team’s effort bringing Voyager Mission images to the public across the globe during the 1980s.

Smith died earlier this month at the age of 86.

He leaves behind a wife, three children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
