EDGEWOOD, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in Edgewood Thursday morning. According to NMSP, around 1:36 a.m. officers learned that Torrance County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a vehicle stuck in the snow on County Road A102 near Monica Lane in Edgewood.

After the deputies arrived on the scene they made contact with a black Infiniti passenger vehicle along with a man and woman. NMSP says at some point during the encounter the man reached into his waistband and brandished a firearm.

The man was later identified as 34-year-old Andrew Castellano of Las Cruces. NMSP says he pointed the firearm at a TCSO deputy and fired it. The deputy was not struck and returned fire.

Castellano was struck by the gunfire at least once. Deputies rendered aid but died due to his injuries.

NMSP reports no deputies were injured during the incident. The identity of the deputies involved has not yet been released.
