NMSP investigate officer-involved shooting in Clovis

New Mexico News

New Mexico State Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Clovis.

Clovis Police say they responded to a call Monday near Prince Street just before 12:30 a.m.

Police say they tried to stop 22-year-old Aaron Chavez in a stolen car, but they say he ran and was shot and killed sometime during the chase.

Police have not said whether he was armed.

State Police say the name of the officer involved will not be released until all interviews are completed.

They say the case will be forwarded to an assigned district attorney’s office for review.

The suspect’s father says Amarillo Police broke the news to him Monday afternoon.

“Let me know that my son, Aaron Chavez, is the one that passed away,” said Clayton Chavez Sr. “It’s pretty tough for me right now to understand that, what I’m going through. It’s a parent’s worst nightmare to wake up and realize you have to bury your son.”

KRQE News 13 also spoke to the owner of the blue car. He says he had been helping Chavez out because he was facing some hard times, and that Chavez stole the car early Sunday morning.
