NMAA: Shortage of referees, officials could put games in jeopardy

New Mexico

The New Mexico Activities Association is in dire need of referees and officials.

The NMAA says the shortage has been getting worse over the past few years, putting games in jeopardy of being rescheduled or even canceled.

The organization is already asking athletic directors to move Friday football games to Thursdays or Saturdays.

The NMAA attributes the high turnover to a number of factors, including scheduling conflicts and poor sportsmanship from fans.

“We’re really striving hard to pair those new officials up with mentors that can show them the ropes, be friends to them, be leaders for them, so hopefully they can say around for a longtime,” NMAA’s Dusty Young said.
