NM Republicans continue fight over controversial gun control law

New Mexico

Republicans say they won’t give up on repealing a controversial gun control law.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed Senate Bill 8, requiring background checks on private gun sales.

The Republican Party has filed several petitions trying to get a repeal of the law on the ballot for voters to decide. However, Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver has denied the request three times now.

Now, House Minority Leader James Townsend says they’ve hired attorneys to look at the case and determine if they should take it to court.

“I think the people all across the state deserve the right to vote on issues like this,” Townsend said.

Right now, the law is scheduled to go into effect July 1.
