Honor guards from around the state learned more about how to properly honor veterans during their funerals.
The New Mexico Veterans Memorial was the site of the 10th Annual Military Honors Burial Training and Conference.
When service members are buried, the volunteer honor guard will fold the American flag, carry out a 21 rifle volley, and play “Taps” on the bugle.
“It’s a solemn experience and very respectful. A lot of times, the family comes up afterward and thanks us, and it’s our honor and privilege to do this,” honor guard member Diane LaBlanc said.
The honor guard teams also competed against one against one another to execute a proper uniform ceremony, helping them perfect their service.
Among those there to train the honor guard — the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force.
