NM governor signs executive order to support census participation

New Mexico

The governor is urging all New Mexicans to fill out their census.

The governor says with a good part of New Mexico being rural areas, it can be hard to reach out to everyone. So Tuesday, she signed an executive order to funnel $3.5 million to create a commission that will reach out to communities to make sure every New Mexican gets counted.

“If we don’t do the census count productively or effectively, we stand to lose nearly $800 million of revenue to the state,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said.

The governor added the state gets nearly $8 billion each year from federal programs based on the census.
