New Mexico Tech students climb Socorro Peak to ‘Paint The M’

New Mexico

Students from New Mexico Tech raced up Socorro Peak Friday to give the iconic letter ‘M’ its annual sprucing up.

Each year, students make the two-mile trek up what’s known as “M” mountain. They climb half a mile in elevation, all while carrying 20-pound bags of lime to reapply the white finish to the giant ‘M.’

The letter has been a long time symbol of New Mexico Tech, which started out as the School of Mines.

The tradition of the run started in 1911.
