New Mexico Tech students climb Socorro Peak to 'Paint The M'

SOCORRO, N.M. (KRQE) - Students from New Mexico Tech raced up Socorro Peak Friday to give the iconic letter 'M' its annual sprucing up.

Each year, students make the two-mile trek up what's known as "M" mountain. They climb half a mile in elevation, all while carrying 20-pound bags of lime to reapply the white finish to the giant 'M.'

The letter has been a long time symbol of New Mexico Tech, which started out as the School of Mines.

The tradition of the run started in 1911.
