Gina Sanchez, an East Mountain High School senior, was selected as one of six finalists for the National Speech and Debate Association Student of the Year award.
The award is given annually at the NSDA tournament in June.
The Student of the Year award is given to the speech student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in speech and debate, dedicated service activities beyond speech and has shown strong character in and out of speech activities.
As a freshman, Sanchez was immediately drawn to the Congressional Debate, a forum where she could speak about current events.
Sanchez has worked with adaptive sports camps and working with students with disabilities.
She also tutors students of all ages from reading to calculus.
This year’s NSDA tournament will be held in Ft Lauderdale, Florida with more than 7,000 participants. The winner will be announced Friday, June 22.
