New Mexico police recover stolen city vehicle

New Mexico

A city truck that was stolen has been found, but the suspect is still on the run. Lovington police say the truck with a Lea County logo was taken from the Recreation Department’s equipment yard Saturday night, along with a welder on a trailer.

The city says the crook had it easy since the keys were accidentally left inside. Officers spotted the truck early Monday morning on the road. When they tried to pull the driver over, he ditched the truck and fled on foot.

The thief had already done some work to the truck. “He had the time to take some white spray paint and he basically repainted the vehicle, but he did leave on the government license plate,” Det. Sgt. David Miranda said.

With the public’s help, they were also able to get the welder back. They say they do have a person of interest, but an arrest has yet to be made.
