The state is encouraging New Mexico businesses to hire foster youth.
Under the tax credits law, employers who hire qualified foster youth may claim a tax credit of up to $1,000.
The goal is to give children in the welfare system opportunities.
“I think even though that stigma sometimes might be there, we have some youth like I said who are smart, who are hard working, and who are just looking for that chance to make a difference and become successful,” CYFD spokesperson Henry Varela said.
New Mexico is the first state in the nation to provide tax credit to businesses that hire foster kids.
