New Mexico’s U.S. lawmakers are reacting to President Trump’s potential national emergency declaration.
Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Lujan said in part, “It’s disappointing that as Congress moved forward with a compromise the president insisted on declaring a national emergency because he didn’t get his way.”
New Mexico’s two freshmen Congresswomen also spoke out.
In a statement, Democratic Rep. Deb Haaland said, “I will fight against President Trump’s senseless emergency declaration and for a comprehensive approach to fix our broken immigration system.”
Rep. Xochitl Torres Small said, “I will work with CBP and people who live along the border to make sure resources are used effectively, appropriately and reach the most rural parts of our border.”
