As the film industry continues to grow in New Mexico, so does the need for people to work on movie sets. The New Mexico Film Office wants to help people living in the state get jobs in the film industry.
Film office officials say getting a movie set job is not like your typical application process. You need to have the skills and build relationships with people within the industry.
The film office says you’ll gain both of those through their new free training classes.
“As the New Mexico Film Office, what we really want to do is help get New Mexicans into work in the film industry and have them be prepared and have them feel like they are apart of the industry as well,” said Barbara Kerford, New Mexico Film Office State Outreach Coordinator.
Kerford says the industry is looking for more than actors, producers, directors, or camera operators. There are dozens of positions many may not even know about.
The free training classes will teach people about those positions like travel coordinators, special effects, and costume design. Kerford says the classes will not only teach people the skills needed for these various positions but will also make sure they’re ready if they do get the job.
“This also will help people for day one. If you get hired onto a film set, you’ll at least have a knowledge base of what you’re going to be doing,” said Kerford.
The New Mexico Film Office held their first training class over the weekend. The first topic was on travel coordinators.
