A New Mexico author is finding major success with the release of her latest book.
Jennifer Cervantes has been able to work with Disney and well-known author Rick Riordan on what’s now a best seller on the internet’s superstore.
Cervantes says “The Storm Runner” is centered around Mayan mythology and its main character is from right here in New Mexico.
Locally owned store Bookworks in Albuquerque is filled the work of New Mexican authors.
“The list goes on and on of the great authors that we have,” says co-owner Wyatt Wegrzyn.
Wegrzyn says Southern New Mexico resident Jennifer Cervantes has solidified her place on that list with her latest book ‘Storm Runner.’
“Kids are very excited to read it, to get their hands on it. We’ve sold through everything we’ve had and we’ve got a lot more coming in,” Wegrzyn says.
Cervantes says Disney and known Mythological author Rick Riordan put out a call, looking for a series of books highlighting other cultures.
“He just felt that he couldn’t write all the mythologies, not was he the right person to bring that cultural perspective,” Cervantes says.
Cervantes answered that call with the story of a 13-year-old boy who lives on the Mesa in New Mexico.
“That first day back at school he learns he is in the center of an ancient evil prophecy that will thrust him into a battle with the god of death darkness and destruction,” Cervantes says.
Mia Worely says she’s reading it right now.
“It’s really good, it’s really fun. If you like the writing of Rick Riordan it’s a lot of the similar writing and you really get that feel of fun,” Worely says.
‘The Storm Runner’ is already a best seller on Amazon, and even though the book is based on a teenager, readers say it has a wider reach.
“It’s definitely one of those reads that anyone would enjoy,” Worely says.
Cervantes says she just finished the sequel called ‘The Fire Keeper.’ That’s set to release next September.
This first book was released just a few days ago and she’s currently touring for it around New Mexico.
