A local Army veteran was surprised with his Purple Heart more than six decades after his injury.

According to the Hobbs Sun News, a surprise ceremony was held at the Hobbs VFW Hall for Lawrence Hill on Wednesday.

Hill was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1959. He was later injured while training as a chemical engineer, but never received his Purple Heart.

During recent visits, medical officials in Hobbs heard about the oversight and started the ball rolling.

The 82-year-old says he was surprised and honored by their efforts.
