National Park Service asks public to stop touching cave formations

New Mexico

Park officials are asking visitors not to touch any formations at Carlsbad Caverns.

They’re also encouraging people to enter the caves in small groups.

This is all in the effort to try and reduce the amount of impact by humans on the caverns.

According to the Carlsbad Current Argus, the National Park Service researched the caverns recently and discovered that human presence is continually changing the composition of the caves and impacting their integrity.

Oil from fingers of tourists can coat the walls, restricting the natural growth of formations.
