Murder suspect leads police on chase before wrecking into gas line

New Mexico

A New Mexico man wanted for questioning for murder in Portales led police on a chase in Clovis. Now, video obtained by KRQE News 13 shows just how dangerous it was.

“Southbound on Prince, southbound on Prince!” an officer can be heard saying on dash camera footage.

Clovis police say it was 23-year-old Manuel Silva behind the wheel, hitting several cars after taking off during a traffic stop last month. He was one of four people charged in connection to the murder and armed robbery of Adam “Florida” Holts in Portales.

The video shows Silva leading police on a short chase through town, then wrecking as he makes a turn. He hit a gas meter, causing a major leak.

“He just crashed out, just crashed out!” said the officer.

“We need a gas company out here. It’s a main line, we got gas leaking everywhere,” another officer said.

Silva ran off, but police weren’t far behind, catching him on North Prince Street. Police also found his passenger and girlfriend, Morgan Carmichael, near the car.

“Get down! Get on the ground!” ordered an officer.

“The gas, the gas!” exclaimed Carmichael.

She was cuffed too, also a person of interest in Holts’ murder.

In a criminal complaint for Silva, a witness states Silva and Carmichael’s brother, Korbin Baldridge, went into the Portales home armed.

Police say Carmichael’s Jetta from the chase was the same car she used as a getaway car the night of the murder. They believe the motive for the murder was to settle a drug debt.

The damage from the chase was quite extensive, from wrecked vehicles, fences and the busted gas meter. A Clovis police officer on the way to chase was also involved in a crash with an innocent bystander.
