All New Mexico State Police officers could soon be required to wear body cameras.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, lawmakers are considering a proposed budget that includes more than $3 million to provide police with the cameras.

Officials say the technology is coming and it’s just a matter of when. Already, New Mexico State Police in Albuquerque have a few dozen body cameras.

Now, the department is preparing to provide cameras to all of its officers.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, the department has about 650 officers. It is also the main law enforcement agency in parts of rural New Mexico.

According to a survey by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, nearly half of police departments nationwide had purchased the cameras by 2016,
