Las Cruces man accused of stealing car with child inside

A Las Cruces man is accused of stealing a vehicle with a child inside.

Around 7 a.m. on Thursday, Las Cruces police say a women left her 5-year-old daughter in the backseat of a running Chevy Cruz near a home on Thomas Drive. When the woman went back inside her home for a moment, she returned to discover both her car and daughter were gone. 

Authorities canvassed the area and alerted all law enforcement agencies to keep a lookout for the girl and vehicle.

Around 8 a.m., a New Mexico State Police officer saw the vehicle driving east on I-10 towards El Paso and shared the information to other agencies and followed it as it traveled west on Stern Road. The officer pursued the vehicle at a slow pace before it came to a stop.

The driver was identified as 35-year-old Victor Castillo, who was arrested on multiple felony charges. The 5-year-old girl was found inside the vehicle and did not show signs of physical injury.

Authorities remind the public to never leave children unattended in a vehicle, let alone in a running vehicle.
