The Las Cruces Catholic Diocese says the tears reportedly found on a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe were made of olive oil, but the church has not ruled out a miracle.

The phenomenon drew thousands of people to the Lady of Guadalupe Church in Hobbs back in May, after churchgoers saw what appeared to be tears on the sculpture.

The Alamogordo Daily News reports, Bishop Oscar Cantu says it was a scented olive oil, similar to the oil they use in baptisms and other ceremonies.

Some questioned if the so-called tears were a substance left over from the manufacturing process, but church investigators say there’s no evidence of that.

The investigation continues into whether the tears were a hoax, or evidence of a miracle.
