Gila National Forest cleanup project gets underway

New Mexico

SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRQE) – The first phase of the environmental cleanup on part of the Gila National Forest is underway.

Forest officials say crews are removing waste with elevated levels of lead at the Royal John Mine and Mill. The project was originally supposed to close the road through Friday, but it’s been pushed back another two weeks to July 12.

The next phase is expected to wrap up by next spring.
