Smokey Bear is arguably one of the most famous bears in the country, and Thursday marks a big milestone.

Thursday, August 9 is Smokey’s 74th birthday, and the Gila National Forest is inviting the public to celebrate.

It was on this day in 1944 when the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council agreed to use him a symbol for fire prevention.

A birthday party is being held Thursday in Silver City from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gila National Forest Supervisor’s office on Camino Del Bosque.
