Caves in New Mexico have tested positive for a substance that can be deadly to bats.
Low levels of the fungus that causes ‘white noise syndrome’ were found in caves at El Malpais National Monument, although there have been no reports of affected bats.
White noise syndrome has killed millions of bats across North America, even threatening some species with extinction.
Officials say they’re working to contain it and protect their bat population.
The disease does not affect humans or pets, but they can still spread the fungus.
