Firefighters warn against using pool floats in Rio Grande

New Mexico

Firefighters are telling everyone to leave their rubber duckies at home before visiting the Rio Grande.

The Corrales Fire Department rescued two people from the river after they tried using swimming pool inflatables in the water last weekend. They say water levels are extremely high in the Albuquerque area, presenting dangerous conditions for unprepared rafters and kayakers.

“We don’t want to pull anyone else out of this water. We want everyone to enjoy it, but do it appropriately with all the right equipment and safety,” Commander Tanya Lattin said.

Officials remind everyone to let someone know if you are going to the river and to always wear a life jacket.
