New Mexico’s first-ever memorial for fallen firefighters is about to become a reality.

According to the Ruidoso News, Bennie Long, who manages Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, realized New Mexico was lacking a firefighters’ memorial and thought, ‘What better place for it than the birthplace of Smokey Bear?”

The $43,000 project has been made possible by community donations and grants, with the Lincoln County Commission putting up the final $5,000 needed to finish it in time for Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday in May.
