Earthship Academy teaches people how to build sustainable housing

New Mexico

The concept of sustainable housing has gotten so popular that it’s attracting people from all over the world to come to New Mexico.

Now, 30 students are on their way to Taos to be a part of a unique academy, centered around learning how to build Earthships.

These unique homes are eco-friendly buildings built from discarded materials that allow people to live almost completely off the grid.

“We started the internship program because a lot of people had interest and wanted to come volunteer. The interns wanted classes, so we created the Academy program in 2011,” said Lauren Anderson, student coordinator.

Since 2011, the academy has grown from just two sessions a year to now six.

Hungary, Canada, France, Nicaragua were just a few of the places represented during the May Earthship Academy, in which 15 students received classroom and job site training.

For Joel Tito, it’s knowledge he says he’ll take back with him to Australia, as he plans to grow an olive farm and live off of that land.

“I need a way of surviving on that land and two,  I don’t know how to build anything. Those things led me to look into sustainable housing and really there was only one school that could give me the intense experience I was after,” said Tito.

As for Stanley Yuen, he’s just hoping to tell people back in Hawaii about sustainable living.

“I want to get those design principles out there so more people can understand what we can do and how we can live more efficiently,” said Yuen.

The Earthship Academy is now looking to reach even more people. For the first time, Earthship Biotecture is offering these classes to kids ages 16 to 20 years old, with the start of its Youth Academy in July.

“We just wanted to really reach out to individuals before they’re going to college and the opportunity to see what other options are out there. Also, just kind of getting the concept of Earthships started at a younger age as well,” said Anderson.

Earthships have been providing a sustainable way of life for those who live in or visit northern New Mexico since the 1980’s.

The next Earthship Academy starts June 1st.
