Environmentalists will ask the Oil Conservation Commission to put a stop to further drilling in northern New Mexico.
According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, Hilcorp Energy Co. is petitioning to change the drilling rules that govern land in San Juan and Rio Arriba counties.
If approved, the petition would allow companies to double the number of wells in operation.
Hilcorp says the move would spur economic development in the region, but opponents claim doubling the number of wells, would be detrimental as the area is already experiencing a methane overload.
The issue will be heard before the Oil Conservation Commission Thursday in Santa Fe.
