The City of Alamogordo is scaling back a project to make up for the money it lost to scammers.
The City’s Finance Department paid $250,000 to what it thought was a legitimate vendor earlier this year only to find out it was a scam.
The City had the option to pull money from its contingency fund to cover the loss.
City commissioners were uneasy with that idea since that money is largely reserved for emergencies.
Instead, they approved a plan to rework a project installing new field lighting at the Griggs Sports Complex, reducing it from $350,000 to just $125,000.
The lighting will still be replaced, but not with LED lights as originally planned.
The City says it is working with its insurance company to try to get the stolen money back.
