Cave in El Malpais closes down

New Mexico

GRANTS, N.M. (KRQE) – A cave at El Malpais National Monument has shut down for the season.

Monument officials closed Junction Cave to protect the Townsend’s Big-Eared Bats, as they hibernate inside this winter.

They say human disturbance during the hibernation can significantly impact the bats, and can even lead to them abandoning the cave altogether. Other caves in the area will stay open to visitors.
