Border group leader attacked in jail

New Mexico
Larry Hopkins

The border group leader in custody on federal gun charges was attacked in jail.

Larry Hopkins was arrested this weekend on gun charges. His group, the Constitutional Patriots, has been detaining immigrants crossing illegally into the U.S. and handing them to the Border Patrol.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office confirms Hopkins sustained non-life threatening injuries during the incident Monday.

Deputies did not specify what happened, but he was transferred to a different facility. Hopkins is scheduled to be in an Albuquerque court Monday.

He has pleaded not guilty to his charges.
