An Artesia man will spend more time behind bars for murdering a security guard.

Bobby Smith pleaded no contest Monday to shooting 24-year-old Michael Evans while he was on duty in 2012. Smith’s competency was called into question three times before the case could move forward.

Judge Robert Perozynski handed down a 13-year sentence, but he did credit Smith with more than seven years of time served.
