Four people have been arrested in connection to a shooting near Española that killed an 18-year-old and wounded three others.
Authorities say the four victims were targeted by mistake.
Cameron Martinez was fatally shot Thursday night on Highway 68 near Española.
New Mexico State Police say 22-year-old Mark Hice, 19-year-old Anton Martinez and a 17-year-old Axel Zamarron are all jailed on suspicion of first-degree murder and other charges.
Police say the three men were all armed with semi-automatic handguns.
Hice told police there was a group of people looking to shoot him so they had a plan to shoot anyone who might be a threat.
They shot at the blue car Martinez was in because they believed the car belonged to someone he felt was a threat.
“For this to happen, it’s just a tragedy. It’s just a complete and total tragedy,” said Carlos Trujillo, Española Valley High School substitute teacher.
Police say 21-year-old Brittany Garcia is accused of conspiracy and tampering with evidence.
New Mexico State Police say the victims had no prior involvement with the suspects.
Officials have not released the names of the three other people in the car, but say they have all been released from medical treatment.
