The 267 Fire near Portales is now estimated to have burned 1,800 acres. The fire broke out around 12:30 on Wednesday just west of Portales.

People near Portales were evacuated from their homes Wednesday afternoon as the winds fueled a 1,000-acre grass fire in Floyd, near Highway 267 and Roosevelt Road.

Four homes and several outbuildings were lost in the blaze and two people were sent to the hospital, including a firefighter.

Wednesday night, the fire was believed to be fully contained. Crews now say it’s at 80% containment.

The cause is still under investigation. Winds near the eastern New Mexico state line were gusting around 50-65mph.

Additional crews from Roosevelt County, Clovis, Texico, Melrose, Cannon Air Force Base and Chaves County were helping with the fire.
