As they face missing another paycheck, so far more than 1,300 federal workers in New Mexico have applied for unemployment benefits.

Secretary of New Mexico Workforce Solutions Bill McCamley says those who applied are among the 7,500 federal workers impacted by the federal government shutdown.

A large portion of those workers are employed by the U.S. Interior and Agriculture and Homeland Security Departments.

Last week, McCamley issued an emergency provision, allowing federal employees to file for unemployment.

The benefits must be paid back when federal paychecks resume.
