New Mexico veteran recognized for good deed

News

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A Navy veteran from Alamogordo saw something wrong and did something about it.

The Alamogordo Daily News snapped these pictures of 90-year-old Harvey Van Winkle cutting weeds that were blocking the view of a billboard depicting the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima along Highway 70.

For Van Winkle, this is very personal; he was part of the battle of Iwo Jima and on the beach when the flag raising took place. He lives with his family in Tularosa.

His son says they drove by one day and Van Winkle commented that someone needed to do some trimming.

Harvey got teary eyed and said it was a lot better and then went on his way.
