New Mexicans are showing off their love for soccer and their pride for the state at Sunday’s New Mexico United match. The highly anticipated Cinco de Mayo match kicks off at Isotopes Park.
For the first time this season, the stadium has officially sold out, meaning there are between 15,000 and 16,000 fans cheering on the team. United takes on San Antonio F.C. who are ranked 16th in the Western Conference.
If United come through with the win, they’ll remain undefeated on the home pitch. No matter the outcome, fans say the team has truly shown them what Somos Unidos really means.
“I love that we’re getting so many people out here you know. People are really excited about the team, supporting the sport, getting loud, getting happy,” said New Mexico United fan Flor Karime.
Sunday’s match is featuring special festivities in honor of Cinco de Mayo. New Mexico’s own Chevelle Sheppard kicked off the evening with the national anthem.
