New Mexico sheriff killed in crash escorted back to Lea County

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Law enforcement officers from across the state helped escort Lea County Sheriff Steve Ackerman home Thursday morning.

Sheriff Ackerman was killed Tuesday night in a crash near Encino while on his way to the Legislative session.

Ackerman was Sheriff in Lea County for two and a half years, but has been a law enforcement officer there for most of his career.

Thursday, officers and deputies led his body in a procession from the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque to Lovington.

Lovington mayor Paul Campos and good friend to the sheriff says everyone there is still in shock.

“He gave everything of himself to the community, and I saw it firsthand. So I am going to miss as a friend, as individual, as a leader in Lea County as well,” said Paul Campos, Mayor of Lovington.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday in Lovington. Ackerman leaves behind a wife and two children.
