ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Distracted driving and DWI are two major problems that are often deadly in New Mexico.
Now, the state is pushing a new set of powerful ads with hopes of combating the issue. The ads address the longstanding problem of DWI and distracted driving.
The new ENDWI ads were unveiled Monday. The ads are told from the perspective of a surgeon who tries to save the life of a DWI crash victim.
The ad also shows headstones one after another with phrases often used to text message. Then it ends with the message, “Don’t let these be your last words.”
The Governor’s Office Monday reiterated that, saying texts can always wait when driving.
“Do you really want your last words to be a text to friends that could’ve waited?” Governor Martinez said.
Along with the new ads, there is a plan to increase DWI patrols over the summer months. This is all part of the annual 100 days and nights of summer. That campaign runs until the end of September.
The governor says DWI deaths are technically down in the past years. But she says there’s a lot of work to do.
In just a few days, tougher sentences go into effect in deadly DWI crashes.
Right now, vehicular homicide carries a six year sentence. On July 1st, that increases to a possible 15 years for each person killed.
