New Mexico Democrats gathered to urge the governor to stand up against militarizing the U.S.-Mexico border.
It’s in response to President Trump’s announcement that plans to deploy the National Guard along the border to combat illegal immigration.
Seven Democratic state reps held a news conference in Las Cruces on Thursday, saying the troops deployment is bad for the state’s economy and culture.
On the other side of the aisle, U.S. Republican Rep. Steve Pearce weighed in on the issue on Twitter. He pointed out that presidents Bush and Obama both sent troops to the border, and said President Trump is, “again having to use this short-term strategy.”
