New Mexico cop’s dash cam catches him sleeping on duty

CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) – A New Mexico police officer was caught on camera sleeping in his police unit. Now, the community he serves wants answers.

The video posted to YouTube this week shows a Clovis police officer snoozing in his patrol car moments before he initiates a traffic stop.

The video, likely leaked by someone with the department, shows Officer Albert Sena, who is a former Albuquerque Police Department officer, sleeping for at least 30 seconds. When he wakes up, he looks around for a few seconds then immediately turns on his sirens and pulls someone over.

The video already has more than 600 views online and a lot of comments.

One person said the cop is taking advantage of tax payers. Another said the officer’s nap was dangerous.

One person defended Officer Sena. She said, “He’s a human being. For all anyone knows he didn’t have a chance to get enough rest before his shift.”

“We need the officers to be alert and out there fighting crime,” said Clovis resident Dan Lindsey, “They have a difficult job to do and that’s what we pay them to do. We don’t pay them to sleep while they’re on duty.”

Clovis Police Chief Steve Sanders said a cop sleeping on the job is “inappropriate.” He said the department is looking into what happened in this particular case.

This isn’t the first time Clovis police dash cam video has raised some eyebrows. Last August, a video emerged showing a Clovis cop throw a handcuffed suspect to the ground because he didn’t give him his ID.

Lapel camera video showed the same officer forcing a middle aged woman to the pavement a couple of months later.

Sena had his law enforcement license suspended in 2007 while he was with APD for excessive force and for using profanity on the job.

It’s unclear what kind of punishment he could face in this case.
